The following case studies provide examples of how Montoro and Associates successfully executes client engagements.

Client: Pearson Scott Foresman (PSF)

Background

Pearson Scott Foresman is the world’s leading elementary educational publisher. Its full line of educational resources supports teachers and helps schools and districts meet new demands for adequate yearly progress and reporting. Pearson Scott Foresman publishes school curriculum materials in all subject areas, including reading, language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, bilingual, ESL/ELL, and religion. Its educational resources and services include textbook-based instructional programs, curriculum Web sites, digital media, assessment materials, and professional development.

Challenge #1

  • Pearson Scott Foresman needed translation of 3,500 pages from English to Spanish for a bilingual Math Program for grades K-5.
  • The project needed to be completed in less than 4 months, from manuscript to printer.
  • The target audience for these books was Hispanic children of different countries and cultural backgrounds, therefore, only translators with ample knowledge of the language and its variations could be assigned.
  • Montoro & Associates was called upon to translate, edit, proofread, and coordinate the entire project. We also served as liaison between PSF and other vendors.

Solution

With an assigned project manager overseeing the operation, and several translators with experience in children’s’ books and education, Montoro & Associates was able to successfully and flawlessly finish the project in a timely manner. Both, Montoro and PSF, were able to simultaneously monitor the work through a FTP site set up exclusively for this project. Having an open communication line such as the FTP site made the execution of the project easier and faster when it came to any linguistic and process questions.

Outcome

The result is a high-quality product that is read by thousands of Hispanic children. This Math program has been successfully implemented in all the adoptions PSF has participated and competed in.

Challenge #2

  • Pearson Scott Foresman needed translation, adaptation, and writing of more than 11,000 pages from English to Spanish for a bilingual Reading Program for grades K-5.
  • The translation was for different components of the Reading program such as Level Readers, Practice Books, and Assessment tests (unit, weekly, and quarterly tests).
  • The books needed to comply with California Educational Standards for Reading.
  • The target audience for these books was Hispanic children of different countries and cultural backgrounds, therefore, only translators with ample knowledge of the language and its variations could be assigned.
  • Montoro & Associates was called upon to translate, edit, proofread, and coordinate the entire project. We also served as liaison between PSF and other vendors.

Client: California Department of Education

GOVERNMENT CONTRACT

Background

Within the California Dept. of Education, the Curriculum Framework/Instructional Resources Division supports the Curriculum Commission, develops curriculum frameworks, oversees the adoption of instructional materials, produces and distributes instructional materials in specialized media, and produces and sells Department publications.

Contract / Scope of Work

Montoro & Associates provides translation, proofreading / re-key services and translation review on an as-needed basis for the California Dept. of Education’s Curriculum Frameworks and Instructional Resources Division. Assignments mainly consist of translating:

  • consent forms
  • applications to participate in programs
  • parental notification documents
  • into over 15 languages

Client: City of Phoenix

GOVERNMENT CONTRACT

Background

Situated in the southwestern part of the United States, Phoenix is Arizona’s capitol and the fifth largest city in the U.S. With almost 1.5 million residents and growing, the city takes up more than 500 square miles, geographically exceeding Los Angeles.

The Hispanic population makes up 42% of Phoenix’s total population so there is a great need of translation services of all city information. Because the Spanish-speaking population makes up such a significant part of Phoenix’s residents, it is vital that all translations be accurate, clear, concise, and easily understandable.

Contract / Scope of Work

Montoro & Associates provides translation on an as-needed basis from English to Spanish of a variety of public information materials for inclusion in city publications, flyers, and announcements. Materials for translation include but are not limited to: pamphlets, newsletters, flyers, general announcement letters, election and legal documents such as ordinances, resolutions, voter forms and signs, etc.

Our contract requires us to work closely with the city’s Public Information Office as well as the different city agencies in making sure that the City of Phoenix’s Spanish-speaking residents are able to accurately and easily understand vital information that the city puts forth.

Client: Rainbow Educational Concepts, Inc.

Background

The InvestiGator Club is a fully-integrated Prekindergarten Learning System which includesTeacher Editions, Teacher Resource Guide, Assessment and Intervention System, Learning Software, Music and Audio CDs, Art Prints, Lapbooks, Nonfiction Science Readers, Puppets, Ancillaries. This program is published by Robert Leslie Publishing.

Challenge

Robert Leslie Publishing needed to translate the entire program from English into Spanish. They needed a company to provide, planning, project management, translation, proofreading, editorial, design, desktop publishing, literature search, illustrations, and quality control for the Spanish version of this early childhood learning system.

Solution

Robert Leslie Publishing hired Rainbow Educational Concepts, Inc to oversee the Spanish translation of the InvestiGator Club Learning system, in turn, Rainbow Educational hired Montoro & Associates to do the actual translation and produce the Spanish version of the entire system. Montoro & Associates was involved from project beginning to end.

Montoro & Assocates has also translated parental notification letters and education related articles for Rainbow Educational Concepts, Inc.

Client: Elmhurst – Jackson Heights Senior Center

Background

The Elmhurst Jackson-Heights Senior Center is perhaps the most diverse institution of its kind in the US. The center is located in New York City at the heart of Jackson Heights, Queens, known for its multi-ethnic population. The Center’s membership mirrors the community it serves, being made up of:

  • 45% Hispanic, including Mexican, Colombian, Cuban, Ecuadorian and Puerto Rican
  • 35% Asian, predominantly Chinese, Korean and Filipino
  • 20% White

To address its diverse population, the EJHSC has developed services that are designed for the specific needs of the different language groups: cultural celebrations that recognize significant dates and historical events, citizenship classes, crime prevention and victim assistance, as well as an expanded social services program that is available to each member in his/her native language.

Challenge

Because of the diversity of the EJHSC’s member population, the Center faced the extraordinary challenge of making all of their services, pamphlets, documents and other information available in several different languages. This was the only way to ensure the elderly members of the EJHSC would understand and fully benefit from the indispensable services that were available.

Solution

The EJHSC hired Montoro & Associates in 2005 to revamp the way they disseminate information to its members by translating all of their pamphlets, documents and other materials from English to Spanish. Interpretation services were also provided on site by Montoro & Associates.

Outcome

The collaboration between EJHSC and Montoro proved to be very beneficial to the Center’s elderly population who would otherwise lack vital day to day information.

Currently, Montoro & Associates is the exclusive translator for the Center’s official documents, safety tip pamphlets, menus, and other brochures that come in English on a daily basis from agencies such as the Police Department and the Fire Department.

Client: Port Authority of New York & New Jersey

GOVERNMENT CONTRACT

Background

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is a bi-state port district, established in 1921 through an interstate compact, that runs most of the regional transportation infrastructure, including the bridges, tunnels, airports, and seaports, within the New York–New Jersey Port District. This 1,500 square mile district is defined as a circle with a 25-mile radius centered on the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.

Contract / Scope of Work

Montoro & Associates currently provides interpretational services, incidental materials and all equipment necessary for the deaf and hearing impaired. Services are provided on-site on a monthly basis at Port Authority Offices located in LaGuardia Airport.
